M4A to MP3: When to Convert and What You Lose

M4A files — AAC audio in an MPEG-4 container — are what iPhones record and what Apple Music delivers. AAC is a better codec than MP3 at the same bitrate. And yet “m4a to mp3” is one of the most-searched conversions on the internet, for one reason: things that play audio are older than the codec.

Legitimate reasons to convert

  • Car stereos and older head units that only index MP3 on a USB stick.
  • DJ software, hardware samplers and gym equipment with fixed format support.
  • Upload forms and transcription services that accept only MP3.
  • Voice recorders and dictation workflows standardised on MP3 years ago.

What re-encoding actually costs

Both formats are lossy, so converting is a second generation of loss: the decoder reconstructs an approximation of the original, and the MP3 encoder then approximates that. At 192 kbps and above the result is inaudible to nearly everyone on nearly all material. Below 128 kbps it stacks up quickly and starts to sound hollow on cymbals and sibilance.

  • 320 kbps — music you care about, or a file that may be converted again later.
  • 192 kbps — the sensible default; transparent for most listeners.
  • 128 kbps — spoken word, podcasts, voice memos.
  • 96 kbps mono — long interviews where size dominates.

Never convert twice

Always start from the highest-quality source you still have. Converting an already-converted MP3 stacks a third generation of loss for no benefit. If the audio will be edited further, convert to WAV instead — uncompressed, so editing and re-exporting costs nothing.
